Medicare Advantage Plans Not Renewing in 2027: Which Insurers and States, and What to Do

Insurers cut a large number of Medicare Advantage plans for 2027. By one analysis of CMS data, about 1.7 million people are in a plan that will not serve their county next year. If your plan is non-renewing, the good news is you get a protected window to pick new coverage. Here is who is affected, how to check your own plan, and exactly what to do.

Last updated: October 13, 2026. Figures are based on CMS 2027 plan data; confirm your specific plan on Medicare.gov.

If your plan is ending, you get a protected window to switch

When your Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewing (not being offered next year), you get a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through the last day of February, on top of the regular Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7). If you move to Original Medicare, you may also have guaranteed-issue Medigap rights (usually within 63 days), so you can buy certain supplement policies without medical underwriting. This is different from a hospital leaving your network, see hospitals dropping Medicare Advantage, where you generally do not get a special window.

Which insurers are cutting plans

Every major insurer trimmed its Medicare Advantage lineup for 2027. The national plan count is roughly flat (about 5,553 to 5,532), but availability shifted sharply by county. Based on CMS plan data:

Insurer2027 change
Centene / WellcareCutting roughly 3,000 plans, exiting about 344 counties (leaving Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Tennessee)
HumanaCutting about 2,400 plans (while adding some counties)
UnitedHealthcareCutting about 690 plans and exiting dozens of counties
Aetna / CVSExiting about 103 counties
Elevance / AnthemCutting about 150 plans, exiting about 56 counties
Devoted HealthExpanding (adding roughly 336 counties)

County counts vary by how they are measured (gross exits vs net). These figures are national summaries; what matters is whether your specific plan is offered in your county next year.

Which states are hit hardest

Plan options fell in 28 states and DC. By share of plans lost, the steepest declines are:

Wyoming

about -43%

14 to 8 plans

Montana

about -28%

32 to 23 plans

Maryland

about -25%

63 to 47 plans

Minnesota

about -22%

68 to 53 plans

The sharpest edge: KFF estimates about 638,000 people in 193 counties will have no general Medicare Advantage drug plan available in 2027 (up from 399,000 in 123 counties). In those areas, Original Medicare with a Part D plan is the path, and it is worth planning now.
Minnesota is a special case. Several insurers (Humana, Blue Cross MN, HealthPartners, Medica, UnitedHealthcare) are cutting plans at once, and Minnesota is one of three states with its own Medigap system, so national advice does not apply. How to check whether your plan is ending

1

Read the two letters. Your Annual Notice of Change (mailed by September 30) lists next year’s changes, and a non-renewal notice (mailed by early October) tells you if your plan is not being offered in your county. Not sure what yours says? Upload it to our free Medicare Letter Check.

2

Compare plans on the Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov for your ZIP code to see what is available for 2027 and what each would cost with your drugs.

3

Decide during your window. Use the Annual Enrollment Period (by December 7) or, if your plan is non-renewing, the Special Enrollment Period through the end of February. If you want Original Medicare plus Medigap, mind the 63-day guaranteed-issue window.

Have us find your new plan

If your plan is ending, the practical question is which of the plans available to you keeps your doctors and covers your drugs at the lowest total cost. For a flat $99, CareRoute Decision Support researches that for you, verifying provider participation directly, not just trusting the directory. Have your notice? Upload it to our free Letter Check first and we explain it in plain language. We are independent, do not sell insurance, and take no commissions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Medicare Advantage plan is ending in 2027?

If your plan is not being offered in your county next year, your insurer had to mail you a non-renewal notice, generally by early October. You should also read your Annual Notice of Change, mailed by September 30, which spells out next year’s changes. To check directly, compare plans for your ZIP code on the Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov, or upload your notice to our free Medicare Letter Check and we will explain exactly what is happening.

Which insurers are cutting the most Medicare Advantage plans for 2027?

Every major insurer pared back its Medicare Advantage lineup for 2027. Based on CMS plan data, Centene/Wellcare is reducing roughly 3,000 plans and exiting about 344 counties (including leaving Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Tennessee), Humana is cutting about 2,400 plans, UnitedHealthcare about 690, and Aetna and Elevance are each exiting dozens of counties. A few insurers, like Devoted Health, are expanding. The total number of plans nationally is roughly flat (about 5,553 in 2026 to 5,532 in 2027), but availability shifted a lot by county.

If my Medicare Advantage plan is non-renewing, when can I switch?

You get a Special Enrollment Period that runs December 8 through the last day of February. You can also use the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) with coverage starting January 1. When your plan is non-renewing and you move to Original Medicare, you may also have guaranteed-issue rights to buy certain Medigap policies without medical underwriting, usually within 63 days, so do not let that window lapse.

Which states are losing the most Medicare Advantage plans?

By percentage of plans lost, Wyoming is down about 43% (14 plans to 8), Montana about 28% (32 to 23), Maryland about 25% (63 to 47), and Minnesota about 22% (68 to 53). Plan options fell in 28 states and DC. Separately, KFF estimates about 638,000 people in 193 counties will have no general Medicare Advantage drug plan available in 2027, up from 399,000 in 123 counties in 2026.

What if I do nothing and my plan is ending?

If your plan is non-renewing and you do nothing, you are generally returned to Original Medicare, which does not include Part D drug coverage. That can leave you without drug coverage and exposed to a late-enrollment penalty. So if your plan is ending, actively choose new coverage during your window rather than letting it lapse.

Is my plan ending the same as my hospital dropping my plan?

No, and the difference matters. If your whole plan is non-renewing, you get a Special Enrollment Period. If your plan continues but your hospital or doctor leaves its network, you generally do not get a special window and must act during open enrollment. If you are in that second situation, see hospitals dropping Medicare Advantage in 2027.
