Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are these cost estimates?

Our estimates are based on national and regional healthcare pricing data, adjusted for your ZIP code and insurance type. They give you a reliable ballpark, but actual costs depend on your specific provider, facility, and plan details. For a tighter estimate with in-network providers near you, try the free CareRoute app.

Why do costs vary so much between hospitals and outpatient centers?

Hospitals charge facility fees that can double or triple the price of a procedure compared to standalone surgery centers or imaging centers. The care quality is often the same for routine procedures. Choosing an outpatient or freestanding facility is one of the easiest ways to save.

What is a deductible, and how does it affect my cost?

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your insurance starts covering costs. For example, if you have a $1,500 deductible and need a $3,000 procedure, you pay the first $1,500 and your insurance covers a percentage of the rest (typically 80%). If you have already met your deductible for the year, you skip straight to coinsurance.

Do I have to pay the full estimate upfront?

Usually not. Most providers offer payment plans, and many hospitals have financial assistance programs for patients who qualify. You can also negotiate the bill after your visit. If you need help with a bill, CareRoute's Bill Defense service reviews your bill and negotiates on your behalf.

What if I do not have insurance?

Self-pay patients can often get significant discounts. Most providers offer 30-50% off for cash pay, and hospitals are required to have financial assistance programs. Standalone imaging centers and surgery centers are typically much cheaper than hospitals for the same procedure.

How is this different from the CareRoute app?

This web tool gives a quick ballpark estimate. The free CareRoute app goes deeper: it finds in-network providers near you sorted by expected cost, gives personalized estimates based on your actual plan details, and can help you find the lowest-cost option for your specific situation.
