Can I Change My Medicare Plan Right Now?
Medicare does not let you switch plans whenever you like. Whether you can change your Medicare Advantage or Part D plan today depends on the calendar and on what is going on in your life. Answer one question below and we will tell you which window applies, the dates, and what you can do, then help you choose if you can.

The Medicare enrollment windows, at a glance
For Medicare Advantage and Part D, there are two windows anyone can use and a set of special windows that a life change opens:
| Window | When | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Enrollment Period | Oct 15 to Dec 7 | Anyone with Medicare can join, switch, or drop an MA or Part D plan. Starts Jan 1. |
| Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment | Jan 1 to Mar 31 | If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan: switch once, or return to Original Medicare and add Part D. |
| Initial Enrollment Period | Around your 65th birthday | A 7-month window to join when you first become eligible. |
| Special Enrollment Periods | When a life change happens | Move, lost coverage, plan ending, Medicaid or Extra Help, and more open a window to switch. |
Changing a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy follows separate rules and is not covered by these windows. Confirm your situation with 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or a free SHIP counselor before you switch.
If you can switch, make it count
Having a window open is only half of it. The real question is which plan keeps your doctors and covers your drugs at the lowest total cost. For a flat $99, CareRoute Decision Support checks the plans available to you against your own doctors and prescriptions and hands you a clear comparison, typically within a few business days. Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Medicare Advantage or Part D plan anytime?
No. For most people, you can change a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan only during set windows: the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7), and, if you are already in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31). Outside those, you need a qualifying life change, called a Special Enrollment Period, to switch. The checker above walks you through which applies to you.
It is not open enrollment. Can I still switch plans?
Often, yes, if something changed in your life. Moving to an area with new plan options, losing employer or union coverage, losing creditable drug coverage, your plan not being renewed, qualifying for Medicaid or Extra Help, moving into or out of a nursing home, or being affected by a declared disaster can each open a Special Enrollment Period. Most of these windows last about two months from the change, so it is worth acting promptly and confirming the details.
What is a Special Enrollment Period?
A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is a window outside the normal enrollment periods that a specific life change opens, letting you join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Different triggers have different rules and lengths, and some are fact-specific, so it helps to confirm yours with 1-800-MEDICARE or a free SHIP counselor before you make a change.
I am in a Medicare Advantage plan. When can I switch?
You have two windows without needing a special reason: the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7), and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31). During the January to March window you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan once, or drop it and return to Original Medicare and add a Part D drug plan. That January to March window is only for people already in a Medicare Advantage plan.
My plan is ending next year. When can I pick a new one?
If your plan is non-renewing, you can choose during the Annual Enrollment Period (by December 7), and you also get a Special Enrollment Period that runs December 8 through the last day of February. If you move to Original Medicare, you may have guaranteed-issue rights to buy a Medigap policy without medical underwriting, usually within a set number of days, so do not let that window lapse.
Does this apply to changing my Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plan?
No. The windows above are for Medicare Advantage and Part D plans. Changing a Medigap (Medicare Supplement) policy follows different rules: you have strong protections during your one-time Medigap Open Enrollment Period and in certain guaranteed-issue situations, but outside those an insurer can usually require medical underwriting and can decline you or charge more based on health. A few states have broader Medigap switching rights. Confirm your state’s rules before dropping a Medigap policy.
