SCL Health Financial Assistance: Now Intermountain Health (2026 Guide)
SCL Health merged into Intermountain Health on April 1, 2022, and no longer exists as a separate entity. All former SCL Health hospitals in Colorado and Montana now operate under Intermountain Health and use its unified financial assistance program. Patients with income at or below 250% FPL qualify for 100% free care, with a sliding scale up to 500% FPL. Colorado and Montana both offer strong state-level protections against medical debt collections.
Important: SCL Health No Longer Exists
On April 1, 2022, SCL Health officially merged into Intermountain Healthcare (now called Intermountain Health). The SCL Health name has been retired. All former SCL Health facilities have been rebranded under the Intermountain Health name.
If you received care at a former SCL Health hospital, you should apply for financial assistance through Intermountain Health's unified program. The old SCL Health websites (sclhealth.org) now redirect to Intermountain.

Colorado State Protections
Colorado has some of the strongest medical debt protections in the country. These apply to patients at former SCL Health hospitals in Denver, Lafayette, and Wheat Ridge.
Credit Report Ban
Medical debt cannot appear on consumer credit reports in Colorado (HB23-1126, effective August 2023). First state to enact this protection.
3% Interest Cap
Interest on medical debt is capped at 3% per year (SB23-093), down from the previous 8% cap. One of the lowest rates in the nation.
$250K Homestead
$250,000 in home equity is protected from medical debt judgments ($350,000 if elderly or disabled). Automatic protection with no filing required.
Colorado Hospital Discounted Care Program
In addition to Intermountain's own financial assistance, Colorado law (HB21-1198) requires hospitals to screen all uninsured patients for discounted care. Patients at or below 250% FPL qualify. Monthly payments are capped at 4% of gross monthly income for hospital charges (6% combined with professional fees).

Frequently Asked Questions
Does SCL Health still exist?
No. SCL Health (Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health) merged into Intermountain Health on April 1, 2022. The SCL Health name has been fully retired, and all facilities now operate under Intermountain Health. The old SCL Health websites redirect to Intermountain.
I have an old SCL Health bill. Where do I apply for help?
Apply through Intermountain Health's financial assistance program. Call 866-877-4325 or apply online through the MyHealth patient portal. Even older SCL Health accounts are now managed through Intermountain's system.
Will Intermountain Health sue me for my medical debt?
Intermountain stopped suing patients after the 2022 merger. Prior to merging, SCL Health had sued hundreds of Colorado patients per year. However, Intermountain does use outside collection agencies for unpaid accounts. In Montana, HB273 prohibits wage garnishment and liens regardless of the provider's policies.
What happened to the Catholic identity of SCL Health hospitals?
SCL Health was founded by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth as a Catholic health system. After merging with the secular Intermountain Health, facilities dropped religious restrictions on reproductive health services. The financial assistance program is now fully secular and uniform across all Intermountain locations.
